Go jump in a river with Felix.
Carl_F
, May 2022
Got time to play in a rainforest river - after a short hike (which was bit crowded - lots of tour groups out that day) visited a gorgeous spot with a natural waterslide and (totally doable) cliff jump, along with a swing over the basin. On the way back to town, the bus stopped at the Luquillo kioskos.
Our guide (Felix) was excellent. Enthusiastic, clear, supportive, and took safety seriously. Gave recommendations for the strongest drinks in Luquillo :-) Took photos/video during the tour and, ion the bus ride back, shared them with everyone (using AirDrop or WhatsApp) - I was impressed by this level of tech-savvy guest service.
Disappointed experience

The trip time was changed from 8 am to 7 am. We were waiting in the lobby. The driver sent us a text , which we missed , and left without us. He could walk to the lobby or ask valet guy outside to call us. After we catch the tour van by Uber, we were riding with a tour guy for another two ours. When we arrived to the forest he said the rive is too high we can not cross it to continue the hike. He canceled the tour and we drove back another 2 hours. It was very disappointed experience.
Unfortunately we did not...

Don't be scared- this is so fun!

This was so fun! My sisters and I were a bit nervous because the tour listing stresses that this is a strenuous hike. The disclaimer is helpful in putting us in the right state of mind, but we found that the hike wasn't as scary as we made it out to be. The shuttle picked us up from Old San Juan, followed by a ~1hr drive to El Yunque. The hike itself is about ~2miles roundtrip, with elevation change, muddy areas, and several areas where you have to wade through the river (never deeper than mid-calf). There are some places where people with a fear of heights might get nervous, but it's worth it! At the end, you go down a natural waterslide (so fun), and get to cliffjump from either 15/10/5/3ft into a cool pool. THere is a rope swing as well. Tips: wear sneakers that you don't mind getting muddy/wet, skip the hat (you'll be wearing a helmet and the rainforest is quite shady), skip the bug repellant (apparently there are no mosquitos in the rainforest), wear your swimsuit under your clothes or clothes you dont mind getting wet, pack a little snack in your lifejacket, bring a waterproof case if you want to bring your phone (but the tour guides take pics along the way and airdrop them on the ride back), come with a sense of adventure.
Jason, Luis, and Tarzan were sooo helpful- we are so grateful to them for guiding us through a fun and safe hike. Would 100% do this again.
Fun adventure and Worth the cost

This adventure was definitely worth the cost. It was approximately a 2 mile hike through muddy and rocky trails. My daughter, who is 14, and I were able to complete it without any problems. Our tour guide was very informative. Can’t remember his name but I believe it was jason or john. Overall it was fun and not as intimidating as I assumed it would be. They had multiple men assisting you. Tarzan was literally able to pull me up a few rocks with one hand and I’m 200lbs lol. We had a nice cool down in the river. They had cliff jumps and natural slides. The only one you have to complete in order to get through the trail is the natural slide. It Looked scary and bumpy but it was a smooth slide. I stayed at the Wyndham and had no problem with my location pick up. The agency was helpful with providing the time and location for our pick up spot. I will do this again. Having a tour guide was definitely necessary.
Highlight of our trip!

Frankie was an incident tour guide! Made everyone feel right at home. No matter how experienced you are as a hiker he accommodated everyone. The hike was not nearly as intense as I thought it was going to be. Sliding down the natural water slides is an incredible experience. There is definitely a little bit of climbing you have to do. Life jackets and helmets were provided. 10/10 will be going back!!!
Great tour but not as challenging as we thought

, May 2022
The tour and guides were great, we had a good time. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is because it wasn’t really a true hike. It was more of a walk (and climb over some rocks) to a waterfall which I’m sure would have been more treacherous had it been rainy and muddy. Lots of people made it crowded. You will definitely get wet, you’ll go through a river and have the option to go down a natural water slide or jump into a watering hole. We wore hiking boots but everyone else wore water shoes and seemed to be fine. If you’re active, this will be easy for you. We aren’t adventurous hikers by any means but this felt easy for us. If you’ve never hiked before, this may be challenging for you. We were expecting a challenging and rewarding hike through the rainforest. Overall, we enjoyed the tour and the tour guides. We felt safe and it was awesome seeing Mitchell aka “Tarzan” jump and do flips into the water. Transportation was easy, we ate at the Luquillo kioskos after the tour.
Great way to experience the rainforest!

Our guide (Jason) was great. He shared so much information about the rainforest with us and his passion really showed. He stopped often to point out plants or animals, and made sure to point out things using all your senses (smell the ginger flowers, listen to the rhythm/beating on hollow roots, etc.). Was definitely an experience we wont forget!
