Nice experience. I've never kayaked before so I was quite nervous to try kayaking in the dark. Transportation from San Juan was good, we were the last group to be picked up so we weren't in the van all night. There were probably about 40 people in our group and there were several groups in the bay. The instructions for kayaking were basic but the guides were helpful as we kayaked into the bay. The biggest disappointment was the fact that it was fairly bright that night and even with the tarps, it was difficult to see the glow of bioluminescent water. Despite that, it was an enjoyable experience.

Honestly, I would not recommend this tour. Despite it advertising that transportation is included from San Juan, they did not have any pick up sites near Old San Juan. While the driver was nice, the tour guides as a whole were not knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. They were also not super friendly when other novice kayakers struggled. The tour groups were far too large- 15ish 2 person kayaks in a narrow mangrove area that was also shared by small boats that were not friendly to kayakers. If you do this tour, we highly recommend copious amounts of bug repellent on both your skin and clothes. The bioluminescence was not remarkable at all and could only be seen when moving the water with your hands. In fact, they had us put a tarp over our heads so that we could see anything at all. Other places (Vieques) are said to be much better. Despite recommending a change of clothes, no time was provided to actually change before the ride back.

    More tarps

It was lots of fun getting to the lagoon at night. We had to look under some tarps, because it wasn't dark enough.. There were only two tarps for several kayaks. I wished they had a tarp for each kayak,I didn't get to see any and soon after we had to return.

The guide was amazing and it was quite the adventure. I wish we didn’t have to put a tarp over our heads to see the bioluminescence though.

The kayak ride through the mangroves was pretty but the bioluminescent bay was pretty disappointing. Just not worth the hour and a half trip from San Juan. The staff was very nice.

Iguana and other things that make the differencee

The driver was excellent. After my morning tour he dropped me off at some beach where I could spend some time before the bio bay excursion without having to travel back and forth San Juan. All the tour guides at the excursion (driver also joined as a guide) were excellent. They were friendly, knowledgeable and the entire excursion with timings, planning and instructions was well prepared. I was kayaking for the first time and it went better than I could have hoped for. The bioluminesent effect was not available because of the moon, but I enjoyed kayaking through mangrove forest to the lagune. We saw an iguana and some birds but the wild iguana really made my day. At the lagune the tour guides gave a tarp to cover four kayaks at a time so that we could see at least some bioluminesent effect. Next time I would take the latter excursion, but for a first timer the earlier one was a perfect fit with some Light before the darkness. In the end it is a tradeoff, and kayaking in moonlight was also a very good memory yo take home.

This was the best thing I did in my time on the island. Very well organized, and relaxing. Got picked up right on time. Brian and Ali(?) were awesome guides- making sure everyone was safe and comfortable. We saw iguanas, egrets and the bioluminescence was really cool. The water was not 'blue' like the photos- wrong time of year... but that did not detract from this wonderful paddle. The full moon was amazing- and it was kinda fun to go under the tarp to see the bioluminenscence. You are in sit on top 2 person kayaks- so you WILL get wet from the waist down- especially crossing the bay into and out of the mangroves. There is a place to change in a little bathroom. It is a typical PR public facility... bring dry clothes. You can leave the in the van. All in all- best thing I did while I was here!!!
