Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Hop aboard your coach in central Rome, and travel south in air-conditioned comfort to Italy’s Campania region. As you travel, listen to tales about the colorful southern Italian area and Mt. Vesuvius.

After the volcano’s infamous AD 79 eruption, lava and volcanic ash destroyed the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. Evidence of those ancient streams of lava is still evident in the area.

First head from Rome to Pompeii. Once a thriving Roman city; today the town is best known for its UNESCO-listed archaeological digs, which are home to a wealth of relics. See incredibly preserved fossils and other ruins, plus plaster imprints of the town’s victims who were buried for years.

See the remains of the Forum and Teatro Grande, where some 5,000 people could once be seated. During your self-guided tour, learn about day-to-day life for the Pompeii locals as you wander streets where ancient shops, cafes and even brothels could be found.

Enjoy free time for sightseeing.

Then, journey to the infamous volcano. Step out of your coach for a steady-paced, walk to Mt Vesuvius’ summit, from where the most breathtaking views await. Make your way over trails covered in pumice rock and ash, before some free time to gaze down into the caldera and across the Bay of Naples.

Finally, head back to Rome by coach and finish with a drop-off at the start point.

Please note: Mt Vesuvius is inaccessible from November 20 to March 31. During this time, the hike is replaced with a visit to the iconic City of Naples. Take a panoramic bus tour and have some free time to walk around the city center.

Location
Stop At:
Pompeii Archaeological Park
The eruption in AD 79 spelled a fiery end for Pompeii, but the catastrophe also almost perfectly preserved the port city under layers of Volcanic ash. Thousands of years later, you can still explore the eerie streets and step inside homes, bathhouses and fast food places on your self-guided tour. You’ll travel from Rome to Pompeii in an air-conditioned private coach, accompanied and entertained all the way by your expert tour co-ordinator. Skip the line at Pompeii and head for a leisurely self-led tour around the city which paints a vivid picture of life in final days before the eruption. Throughout the ruins, you’ll come across harrowing death casts: plaster recreations of unfortunate citizens preserved by the superheated volcanic ash.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At:
Vesuvius National Park
It’s a short coach ride from Pompeii to the foot of the volcano that still looms above it. A half-mile hike from the parking lot takes you right to the sometimes still-steaming crater of Mt. Vesuvius – still perhaps the most dangerous volcano in the world. Stand at the epicentre of that ancient disaster and feel awe at the utter devastation it must have caused, to blast an entire city off the map for millennia. Then turn and enjoy the contrast: the crater offers the most stunning view of the sun-drenched Bay of Naples. In the winter months, when Vesuvius is closed for hiking, the tour travels from Pompeii to Naples, with panoramic views of the volcano and historical commentary from your tour co-ordinator along the way. You’ll have ample free time to explore Naples – a city as vibrant and alive as Pompeii is quiet and affecting – before the comfortable coach returns you to Rome.

A long day, but a great day

Roberto was an outstanding guide, informative and witty. He provided excellent background on Pompeii during the bus ride, was clear about instructions, recommended sites to see, then gave up plenty of time to see the historic site. Combined with the trek up to the crater of Vesuvius, it does make for a long day. We were pooped by the time we got back to our hotel. We were there as a couple in our 70s, so maybe that's why we were tired out.

An awesome day trip. Our guide was super welcoming and had lots of fun facts and stories to tell while on our drive. It was nice to explore Pompeii at my own pace. Lunch was also included in the itinerary at a great little restaurant that was very affordable (a separate fee, not included in your ticket). Then loved hiking Mount Vesuvius with a local geology expert. Thanks John and Stefano!

Pompeii & mt. Vasuvius tour

, Aug 2021
Pompeii ruins itself were very jaw dropping. We expected our guide to be with us but we were left for ourselves to walk around. Another stop at the Volacano in mt. Vasuvius was not completed. Our guide took us half way up the volcano mountain & instead of taking us to the top & having us look in the volcano we came back disappointed. We were told that the government doesn’t allow to go to the top. Most of the tourists along with us were also disappointed as I heard at least 3 couples mentioning to the guide that they expected to go all the way to the top as advertised. This tour should genuinely be refunded since after all that time & money spent we didn’t get what we hoped for.

Everything was as planned, pompei is a well preserved site that really impressed me especially that pompei bodies. If you are going in dinner time be aware of the heat like a dessert. The company did a great job. Thanks
