Make your way to a meeting point by the Colosseum for a 1:15pm departure, then head to the nearby Domus Aurea to go below ground with Italian archeologist guides. You’ll don a pair of 3D glasses to explore Nero’s palace, which he built in AD 64 with golden facades and glittering interiors that were seen as a symbol of Imperial excess. The archeologist guides will help transport you into Nero’s Rome, lost for centuries after being buried beneath Oppian Hill.

When your Domus Aurea tour concludes, head back above ground to visit the Colosseum and Roman Forum, two of ancient Rome’s most fascinating landmarks. You’ll explore the Colosseum and Roman Forum with a small group that’s limited to 12 people, so you don’t miss a word of the tour. Take in the seats overlooking the ancient arena, walk the Via Sacra that was ancient Rome’s main street, and climb Palatine Hill for views of the surrounding ruins.

  • NB: You must have a valid photo ID to enter the Colosseum (student's ID, Driver License, Passport or State ID all work.) You will be asked to also give your name, last name and date of birth (at the beginning of the tour if not provided beforehand.) Security may prevent you from entering the site if the information provided is not accurate and/or don't match the one on your ID.
  • There will be a 30-minute long break to eat and rest
  • It will be possible to stop to use the restroom along the way, as needed
  • Dress code is smart casual. Bring a sweater to wear in the underground area as it can get cold
  • Comfortable walking shoes are recommended
  • Strollers are allowed, but not recommended, as stairs are steep and the ground is uneven. Children must be carried by an adult or be able to walk
  • It is recommended that you bring a hat and sunscreen: Please note that sprays of any kind are not allowed inside the Colosseum.
  • This is an intense 5-hour walking tour as the area to cover is vast. On the way there are vending machines where people can buy drinks and quick snacks to eat while walking
  • Food is allowed in the archeological area
  • For security reasons all visitors and their luggage shall be screened. All objects (including mobile phones) must be put in a bag/backpack or in the tray for X-ray screening
  • Large backpacks, camping equipment, bulky bags, luggage and trolleys are not allowed. Medium and small size backpacks must be checked, as any other bag, with metal detectors, opened and visually inspected by security
  • Please notice that the Colosseum Administration, which depends on the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities has the faculty to close the Colosseum, or parts of it, with or without notice, for events, strikes, heavy rain, or any other reason. In which case, we will offer an alternative itinerary as it seems fit and offer a partial refund.

This tour package is perfect for anybody wanting to see Ancient Rome highlights in one day. Yes it is a lot of walking and you will be wiped by the end of the day but the tour guides do a great job of allowing breaks and not overloading with too much information. Nero's Palace was very interesting!

Eliza was an archaeologist who gave us the best insight possible. We used what she taught in other tours with less informed guides. She also was very attentive, always pointing out water refill points and giving us a chance to catch our breathes if we were moving quickly or moving us to a shady location when possible. She didn’t need any visual aids because of how educated she was, giving us amazing visual descriptions and pointing out things, in the coliseum for example, that were often overlooked. Although her specialty was Egyptology, she even included amazing anecdotes during her excavations to help illustrate much of how we were able to interpret the Roman history and findings as they were discovered. Everything from the history of different marbles and their implications to the comparison of lifestyles between rich and poor romans gave us an incredible insight that made the tour go by in a breeze. Oft over looked, the underground tour through Nero’s Golden Palace with the oculus rift is a must.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered all questions the group asked. We were very glad we booked this tour. And after looking at the huge crowds trying to negotiate getting into the Colosseum, we were glad, and it is really a must to book all tours with skip the line access. You won’t be sorry. I would have rated this review with 5 stars but our portion of the tour for Nero’s Golden House was not completed by our guide that we had grown to love. It’s not the tour companies fault sine the Golden House is handled separately with it’s own archeological tour guides. Our tour was yesterday and the weather was terrific, although no matter what the weather is outside, make sure you bring a jacket for the Golden House tour as it is underground and very cold. The VR aspect of the tour made it well worth it.

Dear Greg W, As sad as we are not to see 5 stars instead of 4 we take pride in knowing that it was for our guide could not being able to continue the tour inside of the Domus with you! As you mentioned this is a rule set by the Domus Aurea which only allows their own guides to take people around. Inside of the Domus Aurea there is a short VR experience that shows what Nero's palace used to look like and how it was rediscovered, which absolutely adds to visiting the monument. The portion of the tour that was Nero's Place was great very interesting and informative. Unfortunately the tour guide for the Colosseum was not that great. Very, very slow paced. It started with no allowance for a bathroom break between Nero's Palace and the colosseum, she then took us to a couple of the displays inside the structure and gave us very little time in the outside area of the colosseum where we stood in one spot, not able to walk about or look at anything beyond the single spot she took us to. We mentioned that we wanted to leave the tour and she persuaded us to stay until we reached the Palatine where she would direct us to the restrooms. After reaching that area and another 15-20 minutes without regard to our discomfort we were forced to make it very clear that we could wait no longer and left the tour. I've had other tours of the colosseum and this was by far the least interesting, slowest paced of them all any tour actually.
