After pickup by coach from your Oaxaca hotel, begin your 4.5-hour city tour at the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzman, a beautiful monument of Baroque architecture. See the Chapel of the Rosary, the main altarpiece and tiled roof, as your informative guide shares engaging history.

Head over to the former Convent of Santo Domingo that houses the Oaxaca Regional Museum. Browse through exhibits of Mixtec and Zapotec artifacts, including the gold treasures from one the tombs at the archaeological site of the UNESCO-listed Monte Alban.

Next, take a pedestrian pathway to the city center and zócalo. Walk around the town square, called Garden of the Constitution, and enjoy the fountains, laurel trees and a bandstand, where marimba bands are known to play. Take note of the galleries, museums, craft shops and restaurants that you will want to check out later on your own.

Fixing for a snack? Head to 20 de Noviembre Market (November 20th Market), also referred to as Margarita Maza. With the help of your guide, discover delicious food from the Oaxaca region, including different types of chocolates, breads, chorizo, mole and more (own expense).

At Benito Juarez Market, Oaxaca’s oldest market that spans an entire city block, you're sure to pick up unique gifts and souvenirs. Scan the stalls for jewelry, crafts, woven textiles, sandals and leather bags.

After your satisfying overview of Oaxaca, enjoy return transport by coach to your hotel.

Excellent Introduction to Oaxaca
Lise_G
, Feb 2020
Gabriel gave a terrific walking tour of the history of Oaxaca and its people. He was well versed and engaging. I'd highly recommend this tour for a first day in the city as it helps orient you to the grid layout. It's also a great tour to have following a tour of Monte Alban. Got a couple of tailored recommendations from Gabriel based on my interest (Mixtec cuisine and gold filigree jewelry). Thanks for a great morning!

A walking tour of historical district

I had a little surprise as description didn't mention that excursion is all walking - that is 3,5 hours. Mostly because the areas that we visited aren't accessible by transport. I came prepared and I had good time. Our guide Antonio did great job managing a bi-lingual group.

It is difficult when both languages have to be used as questions and conversations cannot be translated effectively and efficiently. Just be aware of this. Since I understand both languages I was aware of what was missed on both sides. Be ready to spend a lot of time inside.

This was a three hour walking tour of important places within Oaxaca City. Our guide, Antonio, brought the many items in the museum to life. He was VERY knowledgeable and listened carefully to our many questions, which his presentation generated! Thank you, Antonio!

Great overview of Oaxaca and you really can't beat the price! The guide's English was perfect and we walked around town talking about all things Mexico and Oaxaca related. From the Zocalo and it's impressive cathedral to the markets and the Oaxaca Regional Museum, this tour should not be missed!
