Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Your Oahu shark dive begins at Haleiwa boat harbor on the island’s famous North Shore, where you motor out to the open ocean offshore. While cruising out to the shark diving area, there’s a chance you could see dolphins, sea turtles, surfers or even humpback whales in winter, and the view looking back at Oahu’s shoreline is worth the trip in itself.

Since safety is one of the top priorities for the Oahu shark diving crew, receive a briefing on safe practices and how to act in the cage. Then, when it’s time to finally go looking for sharks, strap on your masks, step in the cage, and your shark watching adventure begins when you’re lowered in the water.

Out here in the open ocean away from the runoff and waves, visibility can often extend to as much as 200 feet (60m). When you first catch sight of a graceful shark swimming slowly but purposefully towards you, there’s a sudden and potent rush of adrenaline you simply can’t contain. Before you can even be scared, however, the sharks have swum to within inches of the cage and are circling in front of your face.

In the waters around Oahu, the most commonly sighted sharks you might find are Galapagos, Hammerhead, and Sandbar sharks, which range from 5-15 feet (1.5-4.5m) dependent upon their age. For travelers wanting to dive as a group, the cage can comfortably hold two adult divers and up to eight at a time—though it depends on current weather conditions and the amount of movement in the water.

And, if you simply don’t want to dive in the cage but are hoping to see some sharks, there’s still plenty of thrilling action you can experience while viewing from the deck of the boat.

Matty and the other crew member (forgot his name) where knowledgeable, funny and made us feel very comfortable before we got in the water. Sharks were guaranteed to be seen and they were..we saw many Galapagos sharks AND a barracuda!! Spent 20 mins in the cage and that was plenty of time to capture some great video of the sharks swimming around us. Used my go pro, snorkel head gear was provided. Water was the perfect temperature. Overall, amazing experience... would definitely do it again.

We had a fabulous experience diving with sharks. One of our favorite memories on Oahu. Jewels and Dave were knowledgeable and reassuring. We learned so many facts about the Galapagos sharks. While in the water we had up to 7 sharks circling the cage. So beautiful and graceful. An experience we will never forget!

Cancelled Trip
Tessa_R
, May 2021
Our shark dive was actually cancelled because of the bad weather but the captain was willing to let us come with him on the boat to see sharks while he picks up the cage. It was awesome because we still saw a bunch of sharks up close in the water from the boat. It was not awesome though because most of us got really sea sick from how much the boat was rocking. If your dive is cancelled because of bad weather or it’s too dangerous, I RECOMMEND JUST STAYING BEHIND because you’re most likely going to get really sick. A few of us from the tour had to lay down on the grass for 30 minutes after we got back because of how sick we all were; the boat was so rocky and unpredictable. It was awful honestly. It was a bummer that we got sick and we weren’t able to actually be in the water with the sharks, but the staff and Viator handled the refund really easily.

Thanks for letting people know we cancel for a reason. I hope you can come out when the water is much nicer. Aloha Joe Pavsek
