A terrible experience to Mixquic on the day of the dead
, Nov 2021
We where supposed to be picked up at our hotel. One day before, I received a text saying that the pick up point was going to be 15 miles away (on my expense). Finally we started our trip to mixquic. After getting lost 2 times we got there 3 hrs after. We where supposed to visit the church (inside), the graveyard ( and walk in around), visit altares and see the "lumbrada" (candles and lights all around the graveyard). We've been told on the bus that the lumbrada will be the day after and we were not going to be able to see it (first disappointing), as soon as we get to the graveyard and church, the church was closed and we were not allowed to walk around the graveyard nor the archeological area. We didn't see any altars by the way. So, after a 3 hour trip we spent 15 minutes watching a closed church, unlighted graveyard and one and a half hour walking in a really crowded market (nothing special at all...) We left the place at 11:15 (45 minutes late because someone was missing) and again, we were supposed to dropped off in our hotel, instead, they hired an uber to take us back to the hotel. No anti covid measurements, the knowledge about the day of the dead of the tour guide was really low (a tourist had to correct her 2 or 3 times) and overall, the safety and control on the group was really bad (they wasn't sure how many people started the tour since one was missing and the numbers didn't match).
Chose the wrong day to visit Mixquic on Día de los Muertos...

Tour left Mexico City on 11/1 a little after 5PM and it took us over 3.5 hours in traffic to arrive in Mixquic (only 32 miles away). During the bus ride, our guide (Sarai) did a great job explaining the history of the celebration. Once we arrived in Mixquic, the church and archeological area were closed and they didn't have any candles or ofrendas set up yet in the cemetery, as the tour had described. Apparently that was supposed to happen the following day (would've been nice to know ahead of time so I could've booked instead). Quite disappointing since we had driven so far and we didn't get to see anything. Made the most of it though by walking around the market and got my face painted like La Catrina. The way home was slightly quicker (two hours) but I didn't get dropped off at my Airbnb until 2AM. Definitely a long excursion: 9+ hours. Know what you're getting into when you reserve this tour!

Hello. I would like to complain about the trip last night to Mixquic. It was a very unsatisfying experience. First, I know that the traffic there and back is out of your control, but the driver in my opinion made it even more unpleasant. On the way there he stopped several times and no explanation was given. Near a big mall he must have missed an exit because he circled back and that took about 20 minutes of time. We arrived after over three hours of traveling. Once arrived so many people were desperate for a bathroom the guide made us wait for almost a half hour before proceeding with the tour. At first he said we had until midnight to be in mixquic and then changed his mind and said we needed to be back at the bus at 10:30. That means we had less than two hours. Once at the bus we did not leave until almost 11:30 as many people decided they had to go get beer for the trip back. On the trip back the driver decided to try to make a shortcut and got off the main road and then we were stuck on a small road in a village that took him almost 45 minutes to get us out of before formally returning to the main road. I have photos. All told the trip back (waiting for the passengers who wanted beer) took almost 4 hours of just being on the bus. Also. The bus was old, had cracked windows.
Great Way To Know First-Hand About "Dia De Los Muertos"

This was a trip that we had no previous reference to so, with that said, we were not expecting much of it. However, it turned out to be a superb experience as the trip will take you completely out of Mexico City, into a much more traditional little village where the customs and traditions are very much alive as they were hundreds of year ago. The intensity with which people at San Andres Mixquic practice this holiday is amazing: the candelas (candle lights), the millions of flowers, the aroma of food, the spectacle of the procession and many more things really gave us a sense of how important this costume is down at the heart of the country. The tourist agency service and the little bus that picked us up was awesome, thank you very much!

First of all, the tour, when ı have bought it was to begin 08.30 in the morning but it was re scheduled to 17.30. It was not a good idea becaues we had a flight early in the morning and it took 3 and a half hour just to go to Mixquic. It was interesting and the guide was very nice and helpful but any way it was very tiredsome.

Three starts because I am torn. On one hand hector was very nice and when asked he explained things well. However I in general people need to stop hyping this particular tour because it's just too crowded and most of the time is spent going to and from the place and queuing up.
