As an FYI, during dry periods, the steam train doesn’t run due to the risk of starting fires. However, the trip was still a great day. Our tour guide, Alana, was terrific and even brought a cake and candle to celebrate my husband’s Birthday.

Amazing day - but short stop at Glenfinnan

This was one of most scenic tours I have ever been on, it’s a long day but well worth it and absolutely incredible. The train wasn’t pulled by a steam engine the day we went (fire risk) but the tour company couldn’t have done anything about that. The tour guide was awesome and the journey itself was amazing. However I give this four stars because the stop where you watch the train go by Glenfinnan viaduct needs to be at least 20-30 mins longer. It is a big area with a LOT to see in two different directions. There are a couple of viewpoints to watch the train go past which are about a 10 min hike each way, you need a few mins to take photos, and the train can run late(and it was in our case, it passed at our suggested departure time). We were only given enough time to see the train but there is also a Gothic Church and Loch Shiel in the other direction, which is a spectacular MUST-SEE lake from the Harry Potter movies for any HP fan (it’s where Hogwarts is!) . We wanted to also see the lake so the Glenfinnan stop ended up feeling v rushed and stressful. We had to sprint to the bus to make it back. If you are given 45 mins there like we were just bear in mind that it isn’t enough time to see everything but I would probably start with the lake and head to the viaduct afterwards. The best viewpoint is the one at the top.

We enjoyed but there is room for improvement!

We took the Jacobite train and Highlands 1-day tour and our driver-guide was Duffy. The route itself was wonderful and we really enjoying the scenic Highlands but Duffy was only good as a driver. To be a successful guide you need to be enthusiastic about what you do, because even though you do this 3-4 times a week, the group is different every time and you need to show some enthusiasm. Duffy’s attitude early in the morning looked more like “ok what do we have here, let’s get this over with”. He’s clearly very knowledgeable about the Scottish history and told many stories (we couldn’t catch everything due to the heavy Highland accent, we asked him to speak a bit more slowly but he didn’t) but he needs to be more lively, communicative and interact more with the group. It was a bit like listening to a recording (that I couldn’t understand 100% so after a while I just stopped trying and simply enjoyed the views). When I asked him which viewpoint is better for the Viaduct, he just said “both are good” when clearly one was much closer (we went to both) but he did not bother telling us. Regarding the train journey, as a Harry Potter fan, I’d like to have the option to pay more for a first-class ticket to get the full experience. 2nd class looks like a normal train but at least from there you can see the train turn on the viaduct and take cool photos out the window. :) Overall, we enjoyed but there’s space for improvement.

Great Day in Scotland

The entire day was exceptional. Our driver/guide Duffy was an outstanding host Nd provided the group with a fun filled day from beginning to end. Of course. The highlight was the Jacobite train, as was the stop at Glenfinnan Viaduct to watch the train crossing over. The scenery on the final drive back to Inverness on the east side of Loch Ness was absolutely breathtaking.
