Fairytale windmills

A beautiful little village that felt like it was from a fairytale. Our guide Aaf was really good and incredible at swapping different languages to make sure everyone was included. The locals were really welcoming too

The story behind the scenery as narrated by the very niece and knowledgeable guide( female, spoke atleast English,Spanish and I think German too). The whole windmill area was pretty awesome-got to see how the windmill runs on the inside. Then saw how clogs are made-bought myself a bright red pair. The cheese four was great too as we tasted all the cheeses made by the family owned business and then bought some to take home to Australia with me. All in all, a pretty awesome day.

Disrespectful bus tour

Checking in was lengthy because, although we were all sent tickets with a scanning code, it was not scanned. Instead the tour guide first read the tickets and then looked up our names on a long list. I'm disabled, wearing a full-length leg brace and walking with forearm crutches. The tour guide left my friend and me behind en route to the cheese shop. Since we weren't given a map or directions, we didn't know where to go. When we finally caught up with the group and confronted the tour guide, he said he tried to walk more slowly which was completely untrue. We were so far behind we lost sight of the group. Then when I said that I'd paid for my ticket and deserved to hear all of the tour, he said he was merely chatting with the group. Well, even that's supposed to be part of my tour too. I was not given equal treatment. If the tour guide had the simplest social skills and knew even rudimentary customer service, he would have apologized. Anyone would know to do this, if only to show me some respect and better represent his company. He held up a spiral notebook with the meeting time hand written in ballpoint pen. Couldn't someone print this professionally on a computer? The tour was hokey, and the Laurel-and-Hardy routine with the bus driver was tedious and juvenile.

Nice short ride (20 minutes) out to the village community. Couple brief shoe making and cheese demonstrations before some free time to explore the windmill village and the surrounding shops. Nice area to visit for a few hours.

A 3.5 hrs trip to the rustic and popular Holland windmills. The guide was very warm in his welcome and explained everything with a smile. Its an experience not to be missed when in Amsterdam

Seeing the shoes made and the cheese tasting! Learning about the industries and windmills was interesting.

Not well organized.

The meeting location and organization of the start of the tour wasn’t very good. We were told to wait outside the building and then told to go into the building to get a “paper ticket” to get on the bus. They were late starting the tour. Evidently from a sick employee.

Hi Don, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to hear you decided to give us a lower rating due to some unforseen issues at the start of the tour. We do hope you enjoyed your time at the Zaanse Schans village. Kind regards, Tour Company

We were happily surprised with this tour. The clog factory and cheese tasting were short but enlightening! We primarily stayed in Amsterdam for most of our trip to the Netherlands so it was good to get out and see a bit of the countryside.

Your guide walked off from the group. Could not hear her descriptions … she needed a microphone. Required lots of walking , but most importantly there was little info on where to find the start. Three guides couldn’t advise

You basically get a bus ride. Bait and Switch.

From the website ad, this isn’t true: “marvel at the interior of a working windmill”. They forgot to mention before you purchase on Viator, that it’s 5€ extra each to go inside the windmill! Change it! We paid, and it was very nice to climb up the ladder to get to the outside near the top of the windmill. This also isn’t true: “cheese farm”. What we saw was a store, nothing like a farm, with a person in costume who gave a four minute speech about making cheese. Anybody who walks into the store can taste the same cheese that we tasted. There was no commentary on the cheese at all. Just a slew of people milling around trying to get thru a long queue to reach for the tiny samples. They were a couple of goats and chickens in a tiny backyard fenced area. Definitely not a farm, just store with a fenced area. Change it to: sample cheese standing in line in a store! Clogs: We couldn’t hear the clog maker talk, there were so many people. Enough seating for about 20, but about 50+ people in the room. This demonstration took about six minutes. All in all, average.

Day out in the countryside
Shirley_H

This was an excellent trip despite the disappointing weather. Windmills, cheese and clogs - clogs particularly interesting but don't sit too near the front for the chippings flying! Cheese tasting was fab with flavours you would never have thought would have seen the light of day! Everything worked well from the departure point, we were met and welcomed ahead of being shown to the bus. Attentive and informative guide, multi lingual and amusing too. Great half day trip.

Great trip. Check in location was inside This is Holland which wasn't clear on the instructions. Friendly guide. Plenty of cheese to taste. Clog making is fascinating and the windmills are interesting. It's very windy - of course, so wear a coat!

A pleasant and relaxed tour embracing nature. Loved the calmness and beauty of the village with the views of windmills, wooden shoe making, cattle farm and cheese produce. The quiz session during the close of the tour was really engaging and thoughtful. Appreciate the whole team who make the travelers feel contended and cherished. Wish you great success and all the very best. Thank You!

Disappointing
James_M

Too commercialized, the windmills seemed to be secondary to the touristy shops. If your purpose is to learn about and see windmills this tour will disappoint.

Hi James, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy the Zaanse Schans village. The tour indeed does not include a windmill visit, but we give the guests extra free time to explore on their own after the guided tour. Kind regards, Tour Company

Windmills and chocolate smell
Agnes_M
, Apr 2022
I went to see windmills with VIATOR tour bus and payed for it but there was some misfortune and I missed the bus on my way back. But there is bus stop near Zaanse Schans museum so I could get back by bus (anyway you need to have day card or something for public transpot). Zaanse Schans is wort visiting. There are very nice little wooden houses and you can see windmills working. You can smell chocolate because there is chocolate factory over the bridge and there is little chocolate shop over the bridge.

Great half day tour. Would highly recommend it. With Covid, we still had time to see the city. Richard was an excellent guide.
