The Basics

The frescoes adorning Raphael’s Rooms were originally commissioned by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s; Pope Leo X continued the commission after Julius' death in 1513 and, when Raphael died just seven years later, artists from his studio completed the frescoes.

The Vatican Museums, home to the Raphael Rooms, are the most visited attraction in Rome, so booking a guided tour with skip-the-line access in advance is a must. Tickets to the Vatican Museums include entry to Raphael’s Rooms. A small-group tour offering early-morning access before the museums are open to the general public is an excellent way to enjoy Raphael's works in relative peace. Many Vatican tours include Raphael's Rooms, the Sistine Chapel, and other highlights of the Vatican Museums—along with St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square.

Of course the content of the tour is awe-inspiring. Our guide, however made it even better! He was so well-informed. He knew exactly how much to share and answered any questions asked thoughtfully and accurately. Also, he was mindful of how long his group had to stand in the sun, where restrooms were available - everything to make sure we were all comfortable and able to enjoy and take in the incredible art, history, and culture. Absolutely worth every penny and more. Thank you!

Our guide was Marco. Marco was very knowledgeable and friendly. He took the time to answer all of our questions and was very patient guiding us through the tour. My girlfriend and I booked a few tours while visiting Rome and this was my favorite one. Thanks again Marco!

Fast Track - Vatican Tour with Museums, Sistine Chapel & Raphael rooms
The Vatican museum and Sistine chapel are rich in narrative and visual detail, steeped in history, art, politics and religion. It takes meticulous planning and deft execution to make the best of all this in a mere 3 hours and Giuseppe, our guide was just perfect. Thanks!

Maybe some improvement of time management

Fast Track - Vatican Tour with Museums, Sistine Chapel & Raphael rooms
It was not exactly what we expected. Vatican Museum was great and Sistine Chapel was awesome.Tour guide was experienced and professional. But time was too short so we didn’t reached to St.Peters Basilica with guided tour and go there independently on next day. Maybe this tour needed more time to complete all the promised tasks. In my opinion Visiting St.Peters Basilica first time is much more enjoyable with experienced tour guide instead to get the expressions only by yourself.

This was a wonderful family experience that lived up to everything I hoped for. We almost didn’t make it because the bus was running late, but they waited in the heat for us. Grazie Mille!! The tour guide was very friendly and extremely courteous, especially with the younger children who were in the group, to relate the experience and stay informative.

When to Get There

The Vatican is busiest in summer, when skip-the-line tickets or a private tour guide are recommended. Though the museums are less crowded during winter, they can still fill up around midday, so join a private tour in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds. The museum’s opening hours apply to Raphael’s Rooms.

Raphael’s Rooms by Name

The Room of the Segnatura (Stanza della Segnatura) was the first to be decorated and contains Raphael's most famous painting, The School of Athens. The other rooms, also decorated with scenes inspired by both religious and political history, are known as The Room of Constantine (Stanza di Costantino), Heliodorus (Stanza di Eliodoro), and Fire in the Borgo (Stanza dell'Incendio del Borgo).
