Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Self-Guided Tour Colosseum Skip-the-Line Ticket
Exactly what we were looking for. Quick and easy way to get into the Colosseum without waiting in the lines. Also allowed us to take it in at our own pace and not part of a tour group.

Colosseum with Arena Access and Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
I’m glad I chose this particular tour and David was like our own historian. Unfortunately it was a major heat wave in June and it was a little hard to be out side but our tour guide David made sure he found shaded areas to speak to us near the sights. You get to go in the Colosseum and see and learn about the battles. Our tour guide was David was excellent! Very knowledgeable and friendly. You’ll see other historical sights as well!

Ancient Rome and Colosseum Private Tour with Underground Chambers and Arena
Frans was such an incredible guide - not only did he have an excellent knowledge of history, but his passion and enthusiasm really brought the Colosseum to life, especially for our 12 year old son. His ‘inside’ tips and knowledge were invaluable and made getting in and around easy and he knew all the best places to take photos. His English was excellent. Thank you Frans for making our trip to the Colosseum so memorable and enjoyable!

Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour Including Pantheon and Piazza Navona
Elisabeta was the best guide I’ve ever had. Brought the history of Rome to life as she took us through the sites. She was good about water breaks & finding shade to walk in when possible. I’d highly recommend this tour if you love history & want to know the stories behind everything you’re seeing (like how the colosseum got it’s name & where Raphael is buried) :)

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
Great way to see the Forum and Colosseum and learn some history. We had been here before but never like this. It’s expensive but worth it if you can afford it. Be careful when booking a small group experience. Some have over 20 people. Our group was limited to eight.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
