Piazza della Minerva is situated in the Pigna rione of Rome within the ancient district known as the Campus Martius. While many other medieval churches in Rome have been given Baroque makeovers that cover Gothic structures, the Minerva is the only extant example of original Gothic architecture church building in Rome. It was the place where the tribunal of the Roman Inquisition took place and father of modern astronomy Galileo Galilei was tried for heresy. Among several important works of art in the church there is Michelangelo's statue Cristo della Minerva. Pantheon is unique in so many ways. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome with a central opening (oculus) to the sky. The great Renaissance artist Raphael is buried inside.
