The Basics

When visiting Vaux-le-Vicomte you can explore inside Nicolas Fouquet’s extravagant palace, where highlights include the King’s Room, Grand Salon, and the basement kitchens. Then take in the view from the Dome, stroll through the formal gardens, and visit the carriage museum. It’s possible to visit independently on an audio-guided tour, take a group or private tour from Paris, or even combine a Vaux-le-Vicomte tour with a visit to nearby attractions like Château Fontainebleau.

Loved this. It was a cool, windy...
Loved this. It was a cool, windy, and drizzly day when we visited, and we almost decided not to utilize the golf cart to tour the grounds. So glad we decided to brave the weather though, because it was at the golf cart rental shack where our champagne and macarons were waiting for us. Popping the champagne near the base of the gilded Hercules statue with sweeping views of the grounds turned out to be one of the most delightful events of our trip to France. On a side note, while touring the chateau's interior, pay the measly three euros and climb the stairs to the top of the chateau's dome - this was another spectacular highlight of our visit.

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
It was a beautiful day (thanks for providing great weather!) Our driver/guide was delightful and informative. Fontainbleau was all it's cracked up to be and Vaux is a jewel that we won't forget.

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
We absolutely loved our tour with Antoine to Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte. He was a great guide (and driver! Multi-talented.) who answered all of our questions and tailored an experience that best suited our small group - just 3 of us. We had plenty of time to visit and explore each location and learned a lot about general French history on our drives to and from Paris. We are very much looking forward to booking another tour with this company (and hopefully with Antoine!!!!) on our next trip to France.

VAUX-LE-VICOMTE: Candlelit evenings (every Sat. from May 7th to Sept. 24th 2022)
I booked this trip with a friend so we could surprise our wives on our last night in Paris. It was quite a hit! Our guide, Oliver, was amazing he put everything together from transportation, and dinner reservations at an amazing restraunt, to champagne before the fireworks display. It was an unforgettable evening.

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Fontainebleau & Vaux-Le-Vicomte. Tej, our guide and driver, arrived right on time at Cafe Le Depart. Tej is so personable and a delightful guide. He is very knowledgeable about the history and architecture of both venues and had lots of interesting things to point out to us on the drive there. He helped us notice things we never would have seen on our own. We highly recommend this amazing tour through Blue Fox Travel.

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
Both sites are awesome. The "immersive" headphones experience at Vaux-Le-Vicomte made it our favorite of the tour. Our guide, Tej, was wonderful - extremely helpful and knowledgeable. You can't go wrong with this tour!

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
Wonderful tour of the Chateaux. Tej is very knowledgeable, and gave us the history of the areas. We made a brief stop at a medieval chateau nearby as a comparison to the architecture of the Chateaux. Highly recommend him and the tour.

Guide was fantastic. Super friendly, enthusiastic, had been to both places many times, put things in perspective that gave us a real feel for the places. It's so much better than going on your own. Don't have to worry about travel details. Just sit back and enjoy.

Vaux-Le-Vicomte was my all time favorite. Definitely my first choice for any Chateaux. Our tour guide Antoine was awesome! A true historian! Antoine went above and beyond to ensure everyone was happy. I’ve trolled the world and Antoine was hands down the best guide I have ever had. Thank you Antoine!!!!

Everything and especially the kitchen sink

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
Such a satisfying day trip with a marvelous and engaging tour guide, Being able to tour the kitchens at Vaux-Le-Vicomte was a treat as I am a retired chef. You often get to see the dining rooms, serving porcelain and silver, but not so much the kitchens. Fontainebleau was fascinating with it's long history and various additions. The art, furnishings, and porcelain were exquisite. We were especially awed by the size and number of centuries it covered

Excellent Excursion To Two Wonderful Chateaux
Robert_P, Oct 2019
Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
This was a great small group (eight guests) tour of two of the best chateaux that I have seen in France. Our guide was both efficient and extremely knowledgeable. The tour went off without a hitch. At Vaux-le-Vicomte, we used English language voice equipment to tour the chateau and the equipment worked perfectly. While we had voice equipment at Fontainebleau, it was less successful since it was far more complicated to use and actually posed a hindrance in seeing the castle rooms in the limited time available. The tour was exceptional and our guide knew all of the necessary things to get us the most return for the time we had. My only complaint is that we only had about an hour and a half for the tour of the rooms at Fontainebleau and this was not nearly enough time given the number of rooms that are open and the items to view in each of the rooms.

Fontainebleau and Vaux-Le-Vicomte Castle Small-Group Day Trip From Paris
our guide was wonderful - we wound up being a group of four people total, plus our guide and his two school-age daughters visiting from uk! at both vaux and fontainebleu we were provided with the audio headphones/pre-recorded guides with a choice of which voiceover to listen to (at vaux) and which path to take (at fountainebleu). we arrived at vaux le vicomte before it even opened and were some of the first people in, with time to go through the tour as well as (most of) the gardens. our guide walked us around the entire outside of fontainebleau and while it was more crowded and there was not quite as much time as i would have liked (i'm a royal history buff and like to linger) it was adequate for being in a group tour, although i could have spent the whole day just there. we arrived back in paris a bit earlier than posted thanks to no traffic due to the summer holidays. i'd highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to see french castles and palaces without the train ride to the loire or the crowds at versaille!

When to Get There

The palace is open to the public daily from mid-March to the start of November. The busiest time is during July and August, when an early morning tour offers the best chance of avoiding the crowds. Alternatively, the most atmospheric time to visit is during the Candlelight Visits, held on Friday and Saturday nights from May to October, when the estate is illuminated with over 2,000 candles, live classical music is played in the garden, and champagne is served.

Architectural Highlights of Vaux-le-Vicomte

Built for aristocrat Nicolas Fouquet during the reign of King Louis XIV, Vaux-le-Vicomte is a remarkable example of 17th-century French Baroque style. The brainchild of architect Louis Le Vau, landscaper André le Nôtre, and designer Charles Le Brun, it’s known for its striking facade, dramatic dome, and lavishly decorated interiors, complete with gilded walls, statues, tapestries, and the era’s finest furnishings. The gardens are equally stunning, with fountains, canals, and stone curbs that create an optical illusion depending on your viewpoint. In fact, the estate is so extravagant, it’s thought to be part of the reason that Fouquet was eventually accused of embezzling state funds and the king imprisoned him until his death.
