The Basics

All Napa Valley Wine Train tours depart from downtown Napa along the Napa Valley Wine Train rail line, but some tour packages include a roundtrip transfer from San Francisco or Vallejo. Opt for a train trip with a gourmet lunch or dinner tour to either bask in the sun or watch it set through the windows or from the deck of vintage Pullman railcars elegantly restored with brass accents, Honduran mahogany, and etched glass partitions. All wine tours include a multiple-course gourmet meal freshly prepared on board but vary in their winery tour options. Gourmands might prefer to ride continuously for three hours for an uninterrupted train dining journey, while wine enthusiasts may choose a five-hour option that stops at tasting rooms of famous wineries along the way.

Guests can sit in the Vista Dome, the glass-enclosed upper deck with panoramic views of Napa Valley scenery, or the elegant Gourmet Express dining train. Vineyard tour options include the Castle Winery tour, which stops at the Castello di Amorosa vineyard; the Raymond Vineyards tour; and the Grgich Hills Winery tour, which offers an evening option. The Ambassador Winery tour includes tastings at two wineries, while the Quattro Vino tour includes tastings at four. Look out for special tasting room events such as the Murder Mystery dinner tour.

An experience to remember. Lunch was good but not overwhelming. A birthday my wife won’t forget. Off the bucket list.

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
It is hard to find an activity that multiple generations would enjoy together. This wine train is a rare occasion when grandparents can enjoy the scenary and kids are excited to be on anvintage train. Both generations can enjoy a great meal together. Parents can sit back and taste some wine.

Beautifully restored cars on the train. Meal was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our leisurely trip through multiple vineyards.

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
This was a great tour. If we should ever do it again we will try the 6 hour murder mystery tour (ie: ala Murder on the Orient Express type). Love that you have a choice of dishes for your lunch entree, and dessert in the window sitting car was wonderful. Definitely worth taking when in Napa.

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
If you want to travel back in time to experience what train travel was like in the gilded age then this tour is worth it. The train has been meticulously restored to reflect that era and a 5 star gourmet lunch is served while slowly traversing a 36 mile route through lush vineyards. It was a wonderful addition to our stay in Napa Valley and I would not hesitate recommend it.

Expensive wine!

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
This was a very enjoyable train ride but the cost range of wines available was too heavily weighted towards the high end.

While i thought this was great, and the food amazing I was disappointed as I thought we would be getting off the train for a winey visit.

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
From arrival at the waiting area to disembarking, this tour was fantastic. Gourmet food, caring service, and a comfortable ride made for one of the best California excursions I've ever had (and I've lived in California 57 years)!

The trip was little long and the wines on sale were mostly $40 and up, but overall a very nice experience.

Great Day on the Train

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
My friend and I rode the Wine Train for the luncheon ride. We hade a wonderful experience. We were seated at a comfortable table by the window while treated to a delicious lunch. The service was excellent and the view was beautiful, as the train took us from Nspa to St. Helena and back. After we finished our lunch we moved to the lounge car to enjoy dessert, coffee and more wine if you desired. It was a fabulous day in Napa.

Fun time in Napa!

Napa Valley Wine Train with Gourmet Lunch
We were in Napa on a family vacation with our adult children. The wine train was a lovely and a great way to see the Napa country side. The food was delicious and we decided to bring our own wine on the train and pay the $20.00 uncorking fee.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The wine train ride is a perfect romantic excursion for travelers 21 and up.

  • Dress for heat or wind (depending on the time of year) if you plan to enjoy sitting on the deck.

  • Bring proper photo identification for wine tastings.

  • Dressing up is recommended, but many opt for more casual attire.

How to Get There

Those with access to a car will find the drive to historic Napa relatively easy from anywhere in the Bay Area. The drive from San Francisco to Napa is about 52 miles (84 km); as with most major metropolitan areas, leave plenty of time to account for unforeseen traffic. Those without access to a car may want to consider renting one for the day or opting for a tour that includes round-trip transportation from San Francisco or Vallejo, as public transportation options to Napa are severely limited.

When to Get There

Wildflowers are in full bloom from the end of February through April, adding delightful splashes of color to the landscape. November is the best time to see blond hills and flame-tipped leaves in the height of fall.
