Travel Town Museum Tours and Activities
Set at the far northern edge of L.A.’s huge Griffith Park, the sweet little Travel Town Museum is dedicated to the history of railroads in Southern California, which owes both its existence and growth to cargo transport and train travel. With a fair-sized collection of vintage locomotives and train cars on display, as well as a miniature train ride and tons of open green space, Travel Town Museum is an enormously popular destination for families with small children.
Tours of individual train cars, led by docents (read: charmingly devoted train fanatics), are offered on the second Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.The museum features a custom-made 16” gauge propane-run miniature train called the Travel Town Railroad, which travels twice around the museum and costs $2.50 per person, per ride.
Parking in the lot adjacent to the museum is free. Less than a quarter mile farther west on Zoo Drive are the Gene Autry Museum (which focuses on cowboy culture and the history of the American West) and the Los Angeles Zoo, making Travel Town Museum an ideal play-break and picnic spot when visiting either - or both - of these attractions.
