Cutty Sark

King William Walk,Greenwich, London, England

The Basics

Visitors can prepurchase an admission ticket and make their own way to the Cutty Sark, before climbing aboard to explore. Costumed characters from Cutty Sark’s past perform several times a day on the main deck.

Many half-day and full-day tours of Greenwich include a visit to the Cutty Sark, as well as other Royal Museums Greenwich venues, such as the National Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House, and the Greenwich Royal Observatory. Passengers on boat cruises along the River Thames may catch a glimpse of the Cutty Sark’s masts from the water.

Wonderful experience

The thrill of being on board the legend. I am afraid of heights and didn't like getting on/off. When we went under the Hull it was just amazing and spooky at the same time.

Impressive Exposition

An idea for a full-size sailing ship suspended over your head is very impressive. The whole exposition is well prepared and may be accessed by public transport or by the cruse ships from the Thame.

We had a really nice time inside the museum. It was a very interesting experience, we were given the opportunity to not only see but listen and touch the different parts of the exhibition, thus submerging us into an interactive experience. It was also really nice how technology was used to make the whole experience come to life and attract the interest of visitors of all ages.

Afternoon Tea and Visit to Cutty Sark Ship in London
Overall a lovely day out and impressive to see. However, I would book the ship entrance and afternoon tea separately. Pros - Cutty Sark itself is just beautiful - Shannty singers - no time limit to look around the ship - for afternoon tea they catered for vegans - Staff for afternoon tea were excellent! Cons - No guide included in this voucher. - no headphones available on site. You tour the ship yourself.* - very loud in the surrounding glass building - it is more of a canteen / café where you have the afternoon tea and not a restaurant. It's under the ship and a bit loud. *Notes: If you want your own audio you should download the smartify app.

Disappointing

Not as interesting as I was hoping having waited years to see. Would have liked more information on the fire that nearly destroyed the ship, more photos of the repair and restoration work done. To many school children on school trips would, have been better to close it the public on days when loads of school trips are arranged.

When to Get There

Peak hours typically fall between 1pm and 3pm on weekends, with July and August drawing the biggest crowds. The best time to visit is in June, when summer weather means you can still fully enjoy all the outdoor attractions of Greenwich, such as Greenwich Park and the waterfront, but without the huge crowds.

On Board the Cutty Sark

During its prime, the Cutty Sark was one of the fastest Victorian sea clippers to sail the seas. The ship would typically set sail from Britain and journey to China, returning with stores of tea. Visitors who step aboard the restored vessel today can take hold of the wheel on its main deck, gaze up at the copper hull, and see the cramped quarters where the captain and crew slept. You can also see interactive maps tracking shipping routes and illustrations.
