When you’re ready for a break from relaxing on Cozumel, take a ferry ride off the island for a day trip to one of the Yucatan Peninsula’s historical or natural attractions. Here are some ideas for places to go, from Mayan ruins to theme parks.
Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park — on Cozumel
Particularly great for families with young kids, Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park provides easy access on the island of Cozumel to a beach, lagoon, scuba diving, and snorkeling. Inside the island’s Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park (Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel), the park allows for visitors to check out the botanical garden or sea lion show, get a massage, visit the Tequila Factory, and more.
Xcaret Eco Theme Park — 12.5 miles (20 km) from Cozumel
Just across the Caribbean from Cozumel on the Riviera Maya near Playa del Carmen, Xcaret is home to natural and cultural attractions such as caves, a river, a jungle, a Mayan village and archaeological site, an aviary and other wildlife habitats, and even an underground wine cellar.
Tulum — 50 miles (80 km) from Cozumel
Known for their clifftop location on the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, the Tulum ruins provide insight into the Maya civilization, which used this site as an important port city before the arrival of Spanish conquerors. Tours from Cozumel typically last six to 11 hours, depending on if you select a combo tour that also visits another attraction such as Xel-Ha.
Chichen Itza — 130 miles (210 km) from Cozumel
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza was one of the largest and perhaps the most mythical of Maya cities. Located in the state of Yucatan, the archaeological ruins include the Great Ball Court and El Castillo, a step pyramid nearly 100 feet (30 meters) tall. Day trips from Cozumel typically run 11 to 13 hours.
