Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon)

Alpes de Haute Provence, France

The Basics

Whether you're after adventure or relaxation, the Alpes de Haute Provence region has it all. The stretch of the Verdon River that flows between Castellane and Chasteuil boasts Class I-IV rapids, making it an ideal place for thrill-seeking rafters. Hiking trails abound, with the 9-mile (14-km) Sentier Martel trail ranking as one of the country's top treks, while the emerald waters of the Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon lake, nestled deep within the limestone canyon, prove the perfect place to swim or sunbathe. For rock climbers, the gorge provides ample adventures with its 15-mile (25-km) network of climbing routes.

Experience the best of Provence (Verdon Gorge included) on a day trip tour from Cannes, Aix-en-Provence, or Nice that also visits the picturesque pilgrimage site of Castellane and the medieval village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, famed for its pottery industry.

Very nice trip, well worth the money

Very nice trip with Rodolpho as driver/guide. Pickup at the agreed time, no delays. We were only six persons for the trip, which was nice. We skipped the lavender fields (October being out of season, obviously) and spent more time in the gorge and villages and also visiting the saint Roselle chapel.

Gorges du Verdon Private Tour
We had a wonderful time on our tour to the Verdon Gorge. We booked a private tour. Our guide provided lots of history along with other interesting information and let us dictate the flow of our day.

Our guide was wonderful, he arrived at our hotel on time and greeted us in friendly manner. He’s driving is good we felt safe during the trip. Did not see the lavender field as it was end of the flowering season.we spend more time at the lake la croix . I just wish we were given more time to explore Mustier- Ste-Marie

Gorges du Verdon Private Tour
Scenery is excellent, A+. Little villages are nice stops, also. This was a trip that we would not have attempted as independent travelers with a rental car due to the switchbacks and rural setting. My only suggestion for improvement is that the guide, although friendly, acted entirely as a driver and provided no commentary - was not a professional guide, as anticipated. That aspect was disappointing and thus, I can't give the trip 5 stars.

Verdon Gorge and Moustiers Ste-Marie Tour from Aix-en-Provence
This day trip was fantastic. The visit and tour of the LOccitane factory started a number of great experiences. Moustiers-Saint-Marie is a very pretty village in which to enjoy lunch. The Verdon Gorge is vast and very impressive. Having a quiet drink in a bar overlooking the lake was a perfect way to complete the day before returning to Aix-en-Provence. Thanks to Valerie we had a delightful day.

The tour exceeds my expectation. The tourguide (Lauren) is really nice and gave insightful information. Free time at Castellane and Moustiers Sainte-Marie gave me freedom to do anything I like :) Thank you for the memorable summer holiday!

Don’t miss this tour with Rodolphe!

Every stop on the tour was memorable—from the lavender distillery to Castellane to the Gorges of Verdon to Lake St. Croix to Moustiers Ste. Marie. Gorgeous scenery and quaint villages. Just enough background information without being overwhelmingly so, allowing us to to explore on our own and to soak in each experience. For me, the most memorable of these may have been our final and unexpected stop: at Chapelle Ste. Roseline, where my patron saint now rests… Rodolphe, our guide, obviously cares about and thoughtfully accommodates the interests of his tour group members.

Excellent day trip...lavender fields, the lake, villages, and a wonderful scenic drive!

Ben was our guide. He was excellent. He spoke English, French, and Italian. Prepare to be in the van for awhile...the drive is very scenic. I recommend bringing some snacks/water for the journey as it can be ~1 hour between stops. Bring bathing suit and a towel if you fancy a swim in the stunning lake that you will visit. I went in late July and the lavender was still in bloom. It was being harvested in some spots, however. Plan accordingly for this. The villages are quaint and beautiful with plenty of shops to stop in. Plan for an entire day out.

Verdon Gorge and Moustiers Ste-Marie Tour from Aix-en-Provence
We had a great time. Moustiers Ste-Marie was such a beautiful little village with a little shopping for mom and hiking for the kids. The gorges was amazing, the lavender fields so serene. If you'd like a getaway day to see the countryside and mountains of provence, this tour is the perfect choice.

Verdon Gorge and Moustiers Ste-Marie Tour from Aix-en-Provence
Great tour visiting L'Occitaine factory and learning the history of Olivier and his discovery? Had lunch in Moustiers. Charming town. One of the prettiest I've seen. We left the best for last - the Vernon Gorge. Magnificent views! Excellent day trip from Aix. Natalie was a super guide - well informed and she is made it a fun day.

How to Get There

A couple of hours' drive west from St. Tropez, the right bank of the Verdon Gorge is easy to reach from the north (on route D952 from Castellane to Moustiers-Sainte-Marie) by car. From the south, it's better to follow its left bank (on routes D71, D90 and D955 from Aiguines to Castellane). The Verdon Gorge is more difficult to access via public transport.

Wildlife in the Gorge

Natural beauty is not the only reason to visit Verdon. The area is a cornucopia of wildlife, attracting birders and flower fanatics alike. Expect to see griffon vultures, the goat-antelope-hybrid chamois, and hoopoes, birds known for their striking striped pattern and eccentric crown of feathers. Turn your gaze downward to admire the lush flora; orchids, hawthorn, and yarrow are among the most prevalent blooms.
