The Basics

A variety of volcano tours visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo and typically include attractions such as Kilauea Volcano (one of the island’s most active volcanoes), Thurston Lava Tube, and Kilauea Iki Overlook. Opt for a nighttime tour to see glowing molten lava and enjoy dinner at Volcano Winery, or choose a private excursion for a personalized experience.

To explore the city, choose a guided tour of downtown Hilo and see the daily farmers market on Kamehameha Avenue, the Big Island Candy Factory, and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. You can also experience Hilo’s natural attractions on a waterfall tour, guided hike, ziplining adventure tour, or helicopter tour. Other top activities include learning about ocean conservation at the headquarters of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, taking in Big Island history at the Lyman Museum, and visiting the Imiloa Astronomy Center and Pacific Tsunami Museum.

Highly recommended if you have limited time on the island
Excellent! So worth taking the helicopter tour over the Park! It allows you to fly over the waterfalls and the volcano craters! weather was beautiful, the pilot had interesting information to share and kept us entertained! Highly recommended if you don’t have much time to spend in the island so you get to see all the beautiful sceneries! Highly recommended!

Circle of Fire Helicopter Tour from Hilo
Wesley was a great pilot. They really did a great job with safety and expectations. Although we missed the lava by a few days, it was a great trip!

Excellent adventure! Our pilot, Ethan, was an awesome pilot and narrator. The ride was smooth, the helicopter clean, and the ground crew polite and courteous. I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

Oahu to Big Island : Big Island Volcano Helicopter Tour & Hilo 1 Day Tour
It was an easy flight to the big island and back . We drove up to the center of the volcano and marveled at the great changes in the landscape, going scorched earth to rainforest within two miles. It was disappointing that the helicopter flight had to be cancelled due to weather conditions and the rest of the day was fully booked and to see others fly while we waited for our tour bus (for over an hour) to come and pick us up.

Unfortunately there was a brush fire that prevented us from doing some of the activities. You do not go up to the top of the mountain. We pulled off on a highway side street. Guide was good. Food at the restaurant was good.

I’ve never seen so many stars in my life. What an experience. Definitely heed the warning for warm clothes, it’s a bit chilly - but totally worth it. The other parts of the tour were great as well - particularly the lava tube - but the star gazing was the highlight. Crystal (our guide) was very knowledgeable, energetic and thoughtful. Wonderful experience all around!

Big Island Tour : Hilo Tour with Waterfall
Karen was a excellent tour host. Her know was on point. She made us feel welcome, educated us on the history of Hawaii, taught us new words, and told us about the multiple languages here including pigeon… to top it off Michael cracked a coconut for us. I would recommend this trip to anyone coming to the big island. Oh yeah, I forgot Karen recommended a dinner location in kona called Quinn’s almost by the sea. 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

Helicopter Lava and Rainforests Adventure from Hilo
This helicopter tour was quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever done. I got to sit up in the front with the pilot and man oh man what a rush! There wasn’t any visible lava when we went, but the views of the calderas were gorgeous regardless and our pilot (Page) was knowledgeable and friendly. The check in process was a breeze and I felt safe and in good hands the entire time. I’m looking forward to the next time!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Hilo is on the wet side of the Big Island and rain is common; don’t forget to pack a light raincoat.

  • Bring sun protection, bug spray, and plenty of water if you plan to visit the jungle.

  • Hilo’s coast is boulder-strewn and tree-lined; head to Kona on the other side of the island for sandy beaches and snorkeling.

Exploring Waterfalls Near Hilo

In nearby Wailuku River State Park you can find Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot (24-meter) cascade famous for the rainbow that forms in its mist during sunny mornings. In the park’s Boiling Pots, you can explore a succession of pools connected by underground rivers, with water that constantly rolls and bubbles.
