The Basics

Located about 31 miles (50 kilometers) north of Belize City, Altun Ha is divided into two main clusters, Plaza A and Plaza B, each with its own special attractions. Plaza A features the mysterious Temple of the Green Tomb, where jade, jewelry, flints, and other artifacts were found.

Plaza B is home to the biggest structure on the site, the Temple of Masonry Altar, which rises more than 60 feet (18 meters) above the plaza. Thought to be the main religious center of the civilization, the temple houses the famous head of Kinich Ahau: a 10-pound (5-kilogram) jade stone carved into the head of the Mayan sun god; this national treasure is depicted on the local currency. Guided tours are available from Belize City, and many combine a trip to the ruins with other nearby attractions and activities.

A great refreshing experience while learning.
As a Belizean, experiencing such a refreshing treasure that we have, was awesome. It was also very interesting to learn about some of our Mayan history associated with the cave.

Altun Ha & Cave Tubing from Caye Caulker
Paul is an excellent tour guide. He was kind, knowledgeable, and very accommodating to our private group. We would be excited to do any additional tours with Paul the next time we come to Belize. This tour is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and did not disappoint. We were very lucky to find this tour and have Paul as our guide

Outstanding! Our guide was waiting for us with a sign as we got off the water taxi from San Pedro. Loved the private experience and personal one on one treatment at the ruins and at the cave tubing. It felt like an outing with a friend rather than a tour. Professional, friendly, and informative.

We did not stop in Belize due to a Hurricane brewing up. Viator gave a FULL refund. NO problem just gave us the refund. Have used Viator before and have had great time. NEVER us a CRUISE LINE tour - nothing but a CATTLE CALL.

Our guide was Gavin and did everything perfectly. He was prompt and very informative about his country. Due to rain we were unable to do the tubing portion so he took us to see some howler monkeys in the wild, which was pretty cool. This is a good tour if you want to experience the personal touch.

Loved it! Some fun with some history and a truer sense of country, history, culture, politics. Our guide, Gavin, was amazing - knowledgeable, passionate, energetic. So much better than I'd expected or hoped and a significant better than the cruise ship offered. Highly recommend!

This tour was the best. My boyfriend and I watched tour buses take 45 minutes to just get off the bus and take a bathroom break. This tour allowed us to get in and out of places more quickly. That being said, we went to a bunch of places to take photos and learn more about the history of Belize. I have raved about this tour experience and forever will spoil ourselves with private tours from here on out.

We loved our private tour and our guide. The cave tubing was amazing! Since we got off the boat a little late we didn't have time for both, so our guide took us to the baboon sanctuary which was very cool. Would definetly reccommend.

Great tour with Paul!

Private Altun Ha And Cave Tubing from Belize City
Our guide Paul was very knowledgeable and did everything possible to ensure we had a great experience! Our trip was a little different since we were traveling right in the middle of covid, so it was just the the two of us, (my husband and me) and some places we would normally have stopped were closed down, (Paul recommended a restaurant called Amigo’s that looked like it would have been great!) But even with us being in the midst of a pandemic Paul was excellent and knowledgeable, and gave us a great tour of the ruins at Altun Ha (literally private as no one else was even at the park) and he made sure we made it safely through the cave tubing even when some extra paddling was required in the shallow parts! Paul did an excellent job, and we would highly recommend this excursion to anyone visiting Belize!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • No one is allowed to climb the steps of the actual ruins, but there is a walkway to reach the top.

  • Remember to bring insect repellent and water.

  • Restrooms, souvenirs, and food and drink are available on-site.

How to Get There

Located near Rockstone Pond Village, Altun Ha is very difficult to reach without a car, as the area is not served by public transportation. The easiest way to get there is by joining a tour in Belize City, Crooked Tree, or another nearby city. Visitors can also walk 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the village of Lucky Strike.

When to Get There

Altun Ha does not usually attract large crowds, but it can get very hot, especially in the summer months. To beat the heat, plan to arrive early in the day, or schedule your trip for some time between late November and mid-April; this is Belize’s dry season and its peak season, which means better weather and more tourists. Altun Ha is open from 8am to 5pm daily.

Cave Tubing

After visiting Altun Ha, many guided tours make a stop to go cave tubing in Caves Branch River in Blue Hole National Park. Designed for almost any age and fitness level, the tubing adventure takes you along the river, floating through an underground world filled with enormous chambers and cathedral-sized rooms decorated with crystal formations and stalactites.
