Pathé Tuschinski Theater

26 - 34 Reguliersbreestraat, Amsterdam, Netherlands , 1017

The Basics

The Tuschinski Theater was commissioned in 1921 by Abraham Icek Tuschinski. Architect Hijman Louis de Jong designed the interior and exterior in a mix of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. The outside with Gaudi-esque reptile-like pointed buttresses and stained glass panels resembles a mythical fortress, while the interiors are meant to mimic a gilded painting. Richly patterned carpets, globe lights, and elaborate murals have been painstakingly restored to match the original designs.

A glamorous relic of the days when going to the movies was a “best-dressed” event, the theater shows the latest movies daily, ranging from arthouse films to big-ticket movies. It has 19 cinema screens and room for more than 4,000 moviegoers. Many of the screens are housed in a newer building connected to the original.

Wonderful tour
Marten, our guide, was very friendly and very informative. The almost three hours disappeared and he told the history and stories of the Jewish culture and Amsterdam history. He pointed out many items we plan to revisit. At end he showed us where the Anne Frank museum was ( must buy on line separately- do at least thirty days ahead) and pointed us to a great lunch spot. Highly recommend this tour. Thanks Marten!
